Sedona Estate Wines

From humble beginnings in 1998, the vision for Sedona Estate has been to produce regionally distinctive wines of impeccable quality from our vineyard in the Yea Valley. After a long search for pristine land with ideal aspects to grow premium fruit, we started the journey of planting our first vines of classic French varieties in 1998.

Sedona Estate – 5-Star winery

The first vintages laid a strong foundation for our young wine brand; the wines’ quality exceeded our expectations. As young entrepreneurs in the Australian wine industry, we dared to submit our first wines from 2003 – 2004 to the wine critic and vigneron James Halliday. We were gobsmacked to find Sedona Estate was ranked in the 10 best new wineries in Australia with the accolades of the prestigious top 5-star winery rating (Halliday Wine Companion 2007).

Sangiovese – our rising star

Temperamental to grow, but very rewarding as a wine, if it likes its terroir, Sangiovese strongly expresses the soil and microclimate of its origin. Our Sangiovese cuttings were sourced from Yarra Yering in 2000. The late Dr Bailey Carrodus didn’t know the clone, which continues to be the wine’s secret!

Since vintage 2010, the Sedona Estate Sangiovese has grown from a humble Italian lighter style red to an exemplary Sangiovese topping its class many times with ratings of 95 and 96 points out of 100 (Halliday Wine Companion 2015, 2016, 2018). More recently international awards were added to the success story of the Sedona Estate Sangiovese. At the 2022 London Wine Competition, the 2020 Sangiovese won Gold and topped its class competing with many Italian reds.

The winemaker’s reserve range

The journey of any good wine starts in the vineyard! Merging the viticultural aspects with winemaking has produced a new wine style of reserve wines exceeding the premium quality of the Sedona Estate range. With the introduction of the Winemaker’s Reserve range, Sedona Estate has entered the competitive global wine industry. Every Reserve Shiraz vintage since 2015 has been awarded Silver at the London Wine Competition recognising its outstanding quality delivered at a reasonable price point to enjoy by our wine friends.

Only made in exceptional years the Sedona Estate Reserve Merlot is our hero wine. It proves the American movie ‘Sideways’ wrong! More importantly, it leaves a lasting impression with many Australian wine drinkers. In November, we will be releasing the long awaited 2021 Reserve Merlot and the wait is definitely worth it!

The newest sedona estate red

Carménère is a well-known South American wine. Its origins are in Bordeaux, France. The devastating effects of Phylloxera breakouts in Europe wiped out this variety from the French vineyards. But not all was lost! Carménère cuttings travelled incognito to the new world and were mistakenly planted as Merlot vines! The secret of Chilean and Argentinean ‘Merlot’ was discovered in 1994.

Carménère has a lively fruit forwardness with fine tannins. Our first varietal Carménère will be released this November. Watch this space!

As an authentic Estate, all Sedona Estate red wines are estate grown, made and bottled.
